Manuscript speech implies reading a previously written speech word for word. Making speeches sometimes comes to us as a 'duty'. Whether it's at school, for a meeting, or at an event; unless you are comfortable speaking in public, speeches may not be everyone's cup of tea. Perfect and well structured submissions are always welcome. Memories of delivering and listening to various speeches are refreshed when faced with speech preparation.
Being the most effective means of communication, speeches are also a powerful medium for dealing with controversial issues in a peaceful way. There are four types of speech: impromptu, extemporaneous, script, and rote. Each has its own purpose, style and uses. We've definitely heard it all, but may not be able to easily tell the difference. Let's understand what kind of manuscript actually looks like.
Scripted speeches are generally used during official meetings, conferences, and in cases where the subject matter of a speech needs to be recorded. This is used especially when there is a time constraint, and the content of the conversation is of the utmost importance. Conveying a precise and concise message is the inherent goal of this speech. Public officials speaking at conferences, and having their speeches broadcast, are relevant examples.
There are various conditions in which this speech style is used. It depends on the context of the address, the purpose of the communication, the target audience, and the intended impact of the speech. Even if understood word for word, speaking script requires enormous effort on the part of the speaker. Accuracy in delivery is not only by reading the text correctly, but with a complete understanding of the content and purpose of the speech. We have witnessed this through many examples of fluency, such as those listed below.
- Speeches given by members of Congress on legislative bills under consideration.
- Report read by the Chief Engineer at the Annual General Meeting.
- Speech of the President or Prime Minister to the Parliament of a foreign country.
- Television news reports (given using the teleprompter) viewed on television.
- Speech given at weddings by the best man, or at funerals.
- Religious proclamations issued by any religious leader.
- Speech in honor of a famous and respected person.
- An oral report of a specific chapter in American history, presented as a high school assignment.
There are several advantages and disadvantages in using a manuscript speech. Among them is that precision in text or speech helps capture the audience's focus. This can prove to be very effective when you need to make important points in less time. Concise and accurate information is conveyed, especially when talking about controversial issues. If you're unclear in your speech and can't read well, it's probably not going to hold the audience's attention. Compared to direct speech, in a read script, the natural flow of the speaker is lost. Likewise, the relaxed, enthusiastic, interactive, and expressive tone of speech is lost. One of the weaknesses is that speech texts can become boring if read in a straightforward manner, without any attempt at non-verbal communication with the audience.
