The role of the conclusion in a speech is to signal to the audience that the speech is coming to an end and help them remember the most important points of the speech. While this may sound insignificant or superfluous, if you end your speech without indicating that you will, it can feel very abrupt and confusing to the audience. Be sure to close the audience with your ending.

It's important that you always tie your conclusion back to your introduction. This can most effectively be done by dialing back to your "hook," or catcher. The 'vehicle' or the same theme, for example an anecdote about Margaret Thatcher, is used to conclude the speech as it was used at the beginning to introduce her. Clever closing lines are commonplace and many strong speakers will simultaneously refer to the themes covered in the introduction and conclusion.

The end of your speech will form a lasting impression on your audience from everything you say. This is why your conclusion is the perfect opportunity to secure key elements of your speech in the minds of your audience. Make sure that you repeat the thesis statement from your introduction, highlight the most important points of your speech, and then relate the speech concept back to reality so your audience can see how it applies to their world.

By repeating your introduction, you get the audience's minds back to the purpose and overall message of your speech. At the end of your speech, make sure your audience leaves an overall positive impression of your talk and doesn't feel confused. By highlighting the main points, you ensure that they are fresh in your audience's memory.

Think of your conclusion as an opportunity to summarize. Even though your speech is undoubtedly well-organized, concise, and poignant, it's still possible for listeners to get distracted or for them to not fully understand certain parts of your speech. Your conclusion is a great place to reconcile miscommunications with your audience.

Your conclusion is a great place to summarize the main points of your speech. That way, as your audience leaves, the most important information from your speech will be fresh in their minds. Summarizing means succinctly communicating complex or lengthy ideas. In the context of your speech, that means briefly reviewing what you just said in a way that is accessible to your audience. The summary should be streamlined, including only the most important information and ideas.

It's important to keep your main message in mind when preparing your speech. Throughout your speech you should constantly link research, examples, analysis, etc. You return to your speech message. Your conclusion is no exception. It's important to reaffirm your speech's focus in your conclusion. By summarizing the main message of your speech, you will refocus your audience's mind back to the overall purpose of your speech and the reasons why they should care about what you have to say.
