Academics from Ukraine explain about the Transcarpathia wine tourism route. A visit to the Transcarpathia wine region will make a bright impression on tourists. This place is an ideal blend of Ukrainian culture with Hungarian, Slovak and Romanian flavors. Plus, here you'll find the untouched nature of the Carpathian Mountains, primeval forests, upland rivers and a rich wine tradition.
The Transcarpathia wine region is the westernmost region of Ukraine and a traditional region of viticulture and winemaking. The first document mentioning wine from the Transcarpathian wine region is a gift letter from the Hungarian king of 1093, according to which the village "Sevlyush" (translated as "wine village") was presented to the monks. However, archaeologists have reported evidence of Slavic tribes growing grapes on this land before. With a well-established winemaking tradition spanning over 2,000 years, the Transcarpathian wine region is now regaining its status as a wine region after the long stagnation of the Soviet Union. The Communist approach to the economy praised quantity over quality and ended with the anti-alcohol campaign and destruction of vineyards in the 1980s. Currently, new vineyards in the Transcarpathia wine region are being actively planted and new wineries are emerging.
The Transcarpathia wine region is located right near the Hungarian border so visitors can take advantage of complex tours, also visiting the world-famous Tokaj Wine Region.
The terroir of the Transcarpathia wine region is advantageous for growing grapes for several reasons. The climate is mild, where there is a lot of humidity and heat, and at the same time, there are significant daily temperature changes, which has a positive effect on the taste complex of wines. The main thing is the land in the Transcarpathia wine region. These are the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains of volcanic origin, and the hills are optimal for vines, which are forced to develop roots and reach great depths, receiving valuable trace elements.
The terroir of the Transcarpathian wine region is considered the best for making fragrant white wine, mostly dry. But climates are changing, and red varieties like Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Merlot, Blaufrankisch and others are doing just fine too.
The Transcarpathian wine region has many historical and cultural monuments that keep memories of the bright events of the European past, because the Transcarpathian wine region is a crossroads of peoples and cultures. The largest city castle in the region is worth a visit. There are many places where traditional culture has been preserved and ancient crafts have not been forgotten.
