Academics from Ukraine explain about Ukraine in general at an international webinar. According to him, Ukraine is a presidential/parliamentary republic with powers divided between the President (Head of executive power), VerkhovnaRada (Legislative power, Parliament) and the court system. Political life is characterized by the large number of political parties. The main law is the Constitution adopted in 1997 Borders with Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Moldova. Its capital is Kyiv (Kiev).
Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. Ukraine is bordered by the Russian Federation to the east and Northeast, Belarus to the Northwest, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to the West, Romania and Moldova to the Southwest, and the Black Sea and Sea of Azov to the South and Southeast, respectively. It has an area of 603,628 square km, making it the largest country in all of Europe.
In 1999–2001, Ukraine served as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Historically, Soviet Ukraine joined the United Nations in 1945 as one of the original members following a Western compromise with the Soviet Union, which had requested seats for all of its 15 union republics. Ukraine has consistently supported a peaceful and negotiated settlement of disputes. It has participated in four-party talks on the conflict in Moldova and promoted a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the post-Soviet state of Georgia. Ukraine has also made major contributions to UN peacekeeping operations since 1992.
Ukraine is a unitary state consisting of 24 oblasts (provinces), one autonomous republic (Crimea), and two cities with special status: Kiev, its capital and largest city, and Sevastopol, which hosts the Russian Black Sea Fleet under a charter agreement. Ukraine is a republic under a semi-presidential system with separate legislative, executive and judicial branches. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine continues to maintain the second largest military in Europe, after Russia. The country is home to 46 million people, 77.8 percent of whom are ethnic Ukrainians, with minorities Russian (17%), Belarusians and Romanians. Ukrainian is the official language of Ukraine. Russian is also widely spoken. The country's predominant religion is Eastern Orthodox Christianity, which has greatly influenced Ukrainian architecture, literature and music.
Ukraine has a mostly temperate continental climate, although the southern coast of Crimea has a humid subtropical climate. Precipitation is disproportionately distributed; it is highest in the west and north and lowest in the east and southeast. West Ukraine receives about 1,200 millimeters (47.2 inches) of rain each year, while Crimea receives about 400 millimeters (15.7 inches). Winters vary from mild along the Black Sea to cold inland. The annual average temperature in Ukraine varies between +5..+7 C in the north and +11..+13 C in the south.
Ukraine ranks 8th in Europe by the number of tourists visiting, according to the World Tourism Organization ranking. Ukraine is a destination at the crossroads between central and Eastern Europe, between north and south. It has mountains - the Carpathian Mountains are suitable for skiing, hiking, fishing and hunting. The coastline on the Black Sea is a popular summer destination for tourists. Ukraine has vineyards where they produce real wine, ancient castle ruins, historical parks, Orthodox and Catholic churches, as well as several mosques and synagogues. Kiev, the nation's capital, has many unique buildings such as the Saint Sophia Cathedral and wide boulevards. There are other cities that are famous among tourists such as the port city of Odessa and the old city of Lviv in the west. Crimea, a small "continent" of its own, is a popular holiday destination for tourists to swim or sunbathe in the Black Sea with its warm climate, rugged mountains, plateaus and ancient ruins. Cities there include: Sevastopol and Yalta – location of the peace conference at the end of World War II. Visitors can also take a boat cruise tour on the Dnieper River from Kiev to the Black Sea coastline. Ukrainian cuisine has a long history and offers a wide variety of original dishes. The Seven Wonders of Ukraine are the seven historical and cultural monuments of Ukraine; the sites are voted on by the general public via internet-based voting.
