The total population of Indonesia is 277.7 million in January 2022. Data shows that Indonesia's population will increase by 2.8 million (+1.0 percent) between 2021 and 2022. 49.7 percent of Indonesia's population are women, while 50.3 percent male residents. At the start of 2022, 57.9 percent of Indonesia's population lives in urban centers, while 42.1 percent live in rural areas.
There were 204.7 million internet users in Indonesia in January 2022. The internet penetration rate in Indonesia reached 73.7 percent of the total population in early 2022. Kepios' analysis shows that internet users in Indonesia increased by 2.1 million (+1.0 percent) between 2021 and 2022.
To illustrate, these user figures reveal that 73.05 million people in Indonesia were not using the internet at the start of 2022, meaning 26.3 percent of the population remained offline at the start of the year. However, issues related to COVID-19 continue to impact research on internet adoption, so the actual number of internet users may be higher than published statistics suggest.
There were 191.4 million social media users in Indonesia as of January 2022. The number of social media users in Indonesia at the start of 2022 was equivalent to 68.9 percent of the total population, but it is important to note that social media users may not represent unique individuals. Kepios analysis reveals that social media users in Indonesia will increase by 21 million (+12.6 percent) between 2021 and 2022.
Data published on advertising resource Meta shows that Facebook had 129.9 million users in Indonesia in early 2022. However, Meta is making important changes to the way its advertising resource reports audience reach data by the end of 2021 – including making significant revisions to audience data is primarily for Facebook – so the numbers shown here cannot be compared directly to the figures published in our previous report.
The company's revised audience figures mean that the reach of Facebook ads in Indonesia is equivalent to 46.8 percent of the total population in early 2022. However, Facebook limits the use of its platform to people aged 13 and over, so it is also worth highlighting that 60.0 percent of the audience “qualified” Indonesians are using Facebook by 2022. For added context, the reach of Facebook ads in Indonesia is equivalent to 63.4 percent of the local internet user base (regardless of age) in January 2022.
By early 2022, 44.0 percent of Facebook ad audiences in Indonesia will be women, while 56.0 percent will be men. The Meta advertising resource only publishes audience gender data for “female” and “male” users.
