Academics from Indonesia explain the characteristics of millennials in the context of digital innovation. Millennials refer to people born during the last two decades of the 20th century. Sociologists and other social scientists always take several years to come up with a name. So far, the millennial generation is known as Generation Y, because they are the generation after Generation X.

The early year for Millennials is from 1977 to 1981. Scholars seem to agree more with the late year, however, which is almost always identified as 1995 or 1996. If you want to play it safe, you'd say a millennial is anyone born during period 1980–1995.

If you're an older millennial, your parents were probably baby boomers (1946–1964). Conversely, if you're a younger millennial, your parents may be from Generation X (1965–1976).

As the name suggests, millennials are known to be born towards the end of the last millennium. During the childhood and youth of the millennial generation, technological advances revolutionized the world we live in. Think of all the aspects of life that are influenced or even controlled by the internet—millennials are maturing at the same time all of these changes are happening.

It's difficult to single out a characteristic shared by millions of people born between 1980 and 1995. Still, researchers and sociologists love to try. Here are some of the characteristics and habits they notice:

- Millennials are good at accepting change. Millennials have witnessed major changes in technology, the economy, and business throughout their lives. If life had taught them anything it would be that things would not last.
- Curious millennials. If there's a faster and better way of doing things, millennials want to know it. They will take advantage of the tools available to them to be more effective. Researchers say that these qualities make them valuable employees.
- Millennials value teamwork. This generation tends to enjoy a collaborative work environment where they can seek alternative viewpoints and input from others.
- Millennials love feedback. Millennials recognize the importance of valuable and regular feedback, especially when it comes to the workplace. In addition to seeking constructive criticism and guidance, this generation also values positive feedback and recognition for a job well done.
- Millennials visit public libraries more regularly than any other age group. The reason for this characteristic is a bit of a mystery. Maybe they got tired of tapping on the screen. Maybe they are nostalgic, and the feel of the book reminds them of their childhood.
