2022 international webinar dealing with vuca, IT Factor

After finishing discussing the meaning, impact of VUCA, VUCA solutions, and business strategies in dealing with VUCA, Mr. Priyadi continued his explanation of the influence of IT technology factors in the VUCA phenomenon. Although the VUCA phenomenon has been discussed for decades, this phenomenon is more pronounced today, where the speed of growth of information and communication technology occurs very massively, especially with the presence of social media and various communication service applications that use internet technology.


VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. In essence, the world of VUCA means the world we live in today, where change is very fast, unpredictable, influenced by many factors that are difficult to control, and truth and reality are very subjective. If we want to survive in today's world, we cannot avoid these changes. We will often face situations where we can only adapt and cannot change the situation. As Albert Einstein said, "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change."


Awareness of VUCA theory today encourages many people to adapt more quickly and effectively. If someone resists change, then it is likely that that person will experience various lags that are quite far. Moreover, with the rapid development of information and communication technology as it is now, any change in one place will be very easy and quickly spread to other areas.


STEKOM University as a professional educational institution with a global outlook is also trying to build an academic community that is responsive to the VUCA phenomenon. This reason is one of the reasons that prompted STEKOM University to hold an international webinar involving speakers from within the country and abroad, specifically discussing various fields related to the VUCA phenomenon. The webinar is entitled "Facing the changing business world in the VUCA Era".


The seminar was held on October 20, 2022 with 2 speakers from Malaysia and one speaker from Indonesia. The third speaker was Mr. Priyadi, M. Kom who was the only speaker from Indonesia. Priyadi is a lecturer in IT at STEKOM University so the material presented is in accordance with his field of expertise, namely "How to deal with vuca in IT-based business and career".


Although the understanding of VUCA has been conveyed by several previous speakers, Mr. Priyadi still conveys the understanding of VUCA. The goal is to have a common perception of VUCA because there may be some differences in the definition or use of different terms compared to previous speakers or those on the internet in general.


In Mr. Priyadi's explanation, the technological factor that greatly influences the VUCA phenomenon is that it is more pronounced now that one of them is social media. The rampant flow of information and communication on social media makes the world seem borderless. Social media is an implementation of the issue of globalization that has been sought after since the 2000s. Information and communication in fields, across regions, across social strata, and even across generations occurs continuously on social media, so that the process of cultural change and changes in perceptions continues to occur in society. The use of terms with different meanings in each language or different social environment also adds to the diversity of ambiguities in society.


The second factor that greatly influences the VUCA phenomenon today is competition in the IT industry. In addition to the industry situation that always wants to make a profit so that it demands their factors to develop very quickly, competition in the IT industry is also very influential. Innovation and change has become their daily life to be able to continue to develop well in the IT industry. As a result, these conditions continue to encourage the VUCA phenomenon to always be present in our environment.


Social media and industry competition ultimately work together to encourage and amplify the VUCA phenomenon. Information on social media greatly affects the speed and changes in trends in society, so that it requires the industrial world to make adjustments to trends that are in line. Meanwhile, the industrial world is also trying to introduce their newest products, both those that follow trends and those that seek to create a market. The second cycle is finally seen to be the mainstream that has the greatest influence on the VUCA phenomenon today.
