2022 international webinar facing vuca, IT expertise to deal with VUCA

VUCA is mentioned in various references as a global problem that is quite worrying, both in terms of business and future careers. Especially if the rumored development of IT technology has threatened several types of businesses and careers. However, there are several new types of careers and businesses that are emerging.


VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. In essence, the world of VUCA means the world we live in today, where change is very fast, unpredictable, influenced by many factors that are difficult to control, and truth and reality are very subjective. If we want to survive in today's world, we cannot avoid these changes. We will often face situations where we can only adapt and cannot change the situation. As Albert Einstein said, "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change."


Awareness of VUCA theory today encourages many people to adapt more quickly and effectively. If someone resists change, then it is likely that that person will experience various lags that are quite far. Moreover, with the rapid development of information and communication technology as it is now, any change in one place will be very easy and quickly spread to other areas.


STEKOM University as a professional educational institution with a global outlook is also trying to build an academic community that is responsive to the VUCA phenomenon. This reason is one of the reasons that prompted STEKOM University to hold an international webinar involving speakers from within the country and abroad, specifically discussing various fields related to the VUCA phenomenon. The webinar is entitled "Facing the changing business world in the VUCA Era".


The seminar was held on October 20, 2022 with 2 speakers from Malaysia and one speaker from Indonesia. The third speaker was Mr. Priyadi, M. Kom who was the only speaker from Indonesia. Priyadi is a lecturer in IT at STEKOM University so the material presented is in accordance with his field of expertise, namely "How to deal with vuca in IT-based business and career".


Although the understanding of VUCA has been conveyed by several previous speakers, Mr. Priyadi still conveys the understanding of VUCA. The goal is to have a common perception of VUCA because there may be some differences in the definition or use of different terms compared to previous speakers or those on the internet in general.


According to the title presented by Mr. Priyadi, then Mr. Priyadi explained about the skills that can be prepared in dealing with VUCA. The expertise in the software field that we can prepare for now is software programming and software engineering. Along with the development of software needs that continue to grow, then a career with expertise in the field of software will get many opportunities in the future.

The next skill that is good for building a career is expertise in the field of business systems. It can include accounting information systems or management information systems. It is very much needed to support the development of various information system products that are good and responsive to the VUCA phenomenon.


Data management is also often seen in various online media as one of the best skills now and in the future. Sub-skills that can be developed are expertise in the field of data mining and statistics. Both will be needed when we face the case of a lot of data. A lot of data that is not analyzed properly, it will be in vain and only a lack of computer resources.


There are many other skills that can be prepared that are still in the same family in the field of IT science. Computer vision, computers, artificial intelligence, and electronic computers / computer hardware can also be skill choices that can be made. Every field of expertise related to the main issues developing in the IT world will be very developed in the future.
 

At the end of his explanation, Mr. Priyadi explained that we can choose one or several sub-skills in the IT field. We do not have to master all the skills in the IT field. The reason is, to learn areas of IT expertise requires a lot of energy and time. If we study them all, our learning may not be deep.
