Communication is the backbone of our society. It allows us to form connections, influence decisions and motivate change. Without communication skills, the ability to get ahead in the world of work and in life itself, is nearly impossible.

Public speaking is one of the most important and feared forms of communication. Glossophobia, or speech anxiety, is the most common fear that people around the world have. Throughout elementary school, it's easy to be the student who sits at the back of the class and avoids raising his hand to escape such a situation. But in the world of work, public speaking is a very important skill to have and hone. It affects simple day-to-day interactions between co-workers, bosses and employees, marketing professionals and clients, etc., and can have a big impact on your career path and your level of success in your industry.

There are many reasons why public speaking is important but the 3 most significant are:

1. To Win Over Crowds

An important skill to have in business and especially in the public relations arena is persuasion skills or the ability to win people over. Inside and outside the workplace, the power of persuasion can take you far and it all starts with honing your public speaking skills. Mastering public speaking results in increased confidence and with it, a cool, collected presence in front of an audience. Of course it is very important to be knowledgeable about the subject you are presenting, but more than that, when making a persuasive speech of any kind, including sales pitches to clients, you must be prepared to answer the opposition, and to talk to your audience. calm demeanor.

To make a strong case, public speaking skills are not only important, they are essential for making strides forward. For example, to express why a particular product or idea would be of interest to a publication's editors, one must use language that is strong and convincing enough to generate intrigue and curiosity. A good pitch will convince consumers or editors to want to know more. When addressing any audience with an idea or argument for or against something, public speaking allows you to make a compelling and convincing case.

2. To Motivate People

A great public speaker gains the power to motivate his audience to do something, stop doing something, change behavior, or achieve a goal. But to carry ideas forward, you have to be able to excite and enliven your co-workers, employees, peers, customers.

Public speakers are leaders who are able to inspire their audience to work harder to achieve their goals. As a public speaker, your role is to influence your listeners and create an environment where everyone is ready for action. You're not just giving a speech in an attempt to get your audience to take a certain action; speakers are part of the action and can convey their passion and encouragement. It is not enough to know about the issue at hand but to get your audience to share your passion. Elections are won simply because one candidate is a better public speaker than the other. Having knowledge is a factor, of course, but more importantly, being able to excite people through public speaking skills will motivate your audience to move. When people talk about having a voice in the world, it means having an impact on the world by voicing your thoughts and knowledge in an engaging way. Mastery of public speaking allows you to connect with your audience and earn their trust. As a skilled public speaker, you will be likeable and believable, and you will be able to inspire and even entertain crowds.

3. To Inform

The ability to inform is one of the most important aspects of public speaking. From presenting research papers and PowerPoint presentations at school to presenting ideas and pitches to your boss or clients, informative public speaking is a critical component of a successful career in any work field. Once you've got their attention, a good informative speech shares your knowledge of a subject with your audience, increasing their understanding and making them remember your words long after you've finished. For example, you may be asked to instruct a group of co-workers on how to use new computer software or to alert your employees about an incident at the company. Whether it's giving demonstrations or sharing areas of expertise, this form of public speaking is an essential skill in today's world.

According to a study by sociologist, Andrew Zekeri, "Oral communication skills are the number one skill college graduates find useful in the business world." Communication skills enhance your ability to interact with professionals and fellow colleagues in a quality and calm way. Public speaking enhances these skills and thus, makes you a more suitable candidate for advancement and success in your chosen field.
