A good informative speech conveys accurate information to the audience in a clear way and keeps the listener interested in the topic. Achieving these three goals—accuracy, clarity, and interest—is key to your effectiveness as a speaker. If information is inaccurate, incomplete, or unclear, it is of limited use to the audience. There are no topics on which you can provide complete information, therefore, we strongly recommend a careful narrowing. With carefully narrowed topics and objectives, it is possible to provide an accurate picture that is not misleading.

\
Part of being accurate is making sure that your information is up to date. Even if you know a lot about your topic or wrote a good paper on it in a high school course, you need to verify the accuracy and completeness of what you know. Most people understand that technology changes rapidly, so you need to update your information almost constantly, but the same goes for topics that, on the surface, seem to require less updating. For example, the American Civil War took place 150 years ago, but contemporary research still offers new theories about the causes of the war and its long-term effects. So even with topics that don't seem to change, you need to check your information carefully to make sure it's accurate and up-to-date.

In order for your listeners to benefit from your speech, you must convey your ideas in a way that your audience can understand. The clarity of your speech depends on logical arrangement and understandable choice of words. You should never assume that something that is obvious to you will be obvious to your audience. Formulate your work with the aim of being understood in detail, and rehearse your speech in front of peers who will tell you whether the information in your speech makes sense.

In addition to being clear, your speech should be interesting. Your listeners will benefit the most if they can pay constant attention to the speech, and this is unlikely to happen if they get bored. This often means that you will decide not to use some topics that you know very well. Suppose, for example, that you have a summer job as a veterinary assistant and learn a lot about canine parasites. This topic may be of great interest to you, but how much interest will it be to the other people in your class? To make it interesting, you need to find a way to relate to their interests and curiosity. There may be certain canine parasites that also pose a risk to humans—this may be a connection that will increase audience interest in your topic.
