Believing in yourself means believing in your own abilities. It means
being able to trust yourself to do what you say you will do and
knowing that the effort will produce the desired results. That means
believing in yourself comes from a mixture of several major
psychological experiences—experiences such as self-esteem,
self-confidence, self-esteem, autonomy, and environmental
mastery.
When we believe in ourselves, it triggers
all kinds of psychological processes that help us achieve our goals,
fulfill our dreams, and increase our well-being. But the reverse side
is also true. Lack of self-confidence or lack of self-belief means
that we are less likely to act, change, or push through to make
things better. Consequently, when we expect to fail, we are actually
more likely to fail (Bénabou & Tirole, 2002).
That
means believing in yourself is like the key turning the ignition and
starting the car. We can't go anywhere without it. Try as we might to
push ourselves forward, we are hindered because our thoughts,
attitudes, and actions are not in line with our goals. So we don't do
what we need to do or we sabotage ourselves along the way, sometimes
in obvious ways and sometimes in ways we are totally unaware
of.
Believing in yourself includes things like
self-esteem, self-confidence, self-confidence, autonomy, and mastery
of the environment. These concepts are related but different. So I
think it's useful to learn about each one. That way, we can explore
which areas we struggle with and take more efficient action to start
believing in ourselves more. That way we'll get more than just "just
believe in yourself" advice—you'll have the information to
understand why you don't believe and the tools to start changing
these beliefs.
- Self-esteem is the feeling that you have
value as a human being.
- Confidence is a positive attitude
about your abilities, qualities and judgment.
- Self-confidence
is the belief that you can rely on yourself.
- Autonomy is the
feeling of being able to choose and direct one's own behavior.
-
Environmental mastery is your belief that your efforts can produce
the changes you desire.
These are some of the key
components involved in believing in yourself. Maybe you struggle with
just one of them or maybe you struggle with all of them. But by
understanding where your struggles lie, it will be easier to start
changing your attitude about yourself.
