Academics from Ukraine explain about the sea port of Odesa. Odesa Port or Odesa Seaport located near Odesa is the largest seaport in Ukraine and one of the largest seaports in the Black Sea basin, with a total annual traffic capacity of 40 million tons (15 million tons dry bulk and 25 million tons liquid bulk). . This port has direct access to the rail line which allows the rapid transfer of cargo from sea to land transportation. Together with the younger satellite ports Chornomorsk (1958) and Yuzhne (1973), Odesa Port is the main freight and passenger transport hub in Ukraine.

This port is located on the west coast of Odesa Bay. It consists of several harbors separated from each other by a number of piers, while the harbor itself is separated from the open sea by several long breakwaters located in Odesa Bay. Around the south pier (Karantyny) there is a passenger terminal with a multi-storey hotel at Nova pier. Towards the middle there is the Ship Maintenance Plant "Ukraine". To the north is the main grain and oil terminal, while to the south is a smaller oil terminal in the middle of the container loading jetty.

Odesa port has one of the largest passenger terminals in the Black Sea basin; it handled around 4 million passengers in 2007. The terminal can simultaneously receive five motor vessels in berth, for a total length of up to 1,370 m (4,490 ft). Depth near the wharf varied from 9.5 to 11.5 m (31 to 38 ft). Harbor facilities allow berthing of vessels up to 300 m (980 ft) in length.

The terminal has a car park with 24 hour security. The complex has a number of bars, a concert-exhibition hall, a maritime gallery, an anchor museum, an exhibition of the Ukrainian maritime fleet, a yacht marina complex, a diving center of the local Poseidon diving club, Saint Nicholas Church, four-star hotel "Odesa", restaurant "Grand Europe" , and others.

The shipyard was founded from the rowing fleet of the Admiralty Shops of the Black Sea a year before the founding of the city of Odesa. During Soviet times, the factory became the main support base for the Black Sea Shipping Company.

The quay area is 75,524 m2 (812,930 sq ft). It can accommodate ships with a displacement of up to 30,000 tons. The length of the wharf is a total of 1,230 m (4,040 ft), including 570 m (1,870 ft) for ship maintenance. The depth of the wharf reaches up to 7.1 m (23 ft). The cargo lifting capability consists of six portal cranes lifting 10-30 tons and two floating cranes, one self-propelled crane lifting 100 tons, another fixed lifting 5 tons.
