Green technology aims to improve our quality of life while respecting the environment. This of course has to be economically viable as well. That's why green technology is very important to increase the actual facts about sustainability. Because only thanks to technology can we achieve sustainable development.
In what ways can technology help us achieve sustainability? Green technology goals are aligned with the 3 pillars of sustainability, helping us reach the sweet spot where human development is ethical and in harmony with nature.
Thanks to the increased environmental awareness and the benefits of green technology, the industry is growing fast and attracting heavy investment and capital. Lead also for social benefits thanks to the large number of jobs created. Those are certainly some great green technology goals to achieve.
1. Reduce environmental footprint
The first goal of green technology is to help us protect the environment and deliver natural resources. That's why we call it "green" technology! Different types of green technology can pursue different goals for the environment:
- Repairing the damage done to our planet in the past – Cleaning up our oceans of plastic, conserving biodiversity, restoring forests, capturing carbon to reduce global warming, and so on.
- Reducing the use of natural resources – Renewable energy, digital technology, hydroponics (see also hydroponic vs aeroponic farming), increasing production efficiency thanks to the benefits of Industry 4.0, and many more.
- Reducing waste and emissions – Biogas, bio-packaging, reducing CO2 emissions, etc.
There are many examples of green technology that show how it is possible to pursue these goals and help us conserve natural resources and protect the environment.
2. Economic feasibility
Economic feasibility is another important goal of green technology. Because technology must be sustainable to be effective in the long term, and this cannot happen if it is not economically and profitably viable.
Profitable green technology companies will attract more capital and investment. This will help further technology development and accelerate mass adoption, maximizing benefits to the environment and society.
Governments can also contribute with grants and funding to help green tech companies get started, but in the long term, the technology has to be economically viable and profitable for mass adoption.
3. Improving the quality of life
Among the goals of green technology, improving the quality of life is also important. Because if green technology improves our well-being, it will be more valuable and easier to adopt.
For example, technologies used in sustainable agriculture, such as integrated pest control and crop rotation reduce the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Therefore, it is possible to produce better quality food while reducing environmental impact.
Green technologies contribute to social sustainability by creating new jobs and increasing our social well-being.
The presenter who delivered the material was Mr. Wibi Ardi Alvianto. Mr. wibi is a STEKOM university lecturer in the Graphic Design study program. The title of the material presented was "Advantages and Disadvantages of Green Engineering". As one of the options in technological engineering, of course this type of engineering has both advantages and disadvantages. By understanding these two issues, we will be able to decide and anticipate correctly if we decide to use green engineering in our projects.
The webinar activity is part of the implementation of STEKOM University's commitment to increase various international activities in order to realize the vision to become an international-class university. Various international activities carried out by STEKOM University continue from year to year. There are international activities that are sustainable and there are also some international activities that are not sustainable. All types of activities are accommodated internationally and regulated by the International department of STEKOM University.
