There are many causes of world food shortages. Among the causes is climate change / global warming. Global warming which has an extreme impact on climate change has already been accused of being the culprit of the food crisis. The climate and weather that are no longer able to be predicted have made most of the productive agricultural land no longer able to meet the food needs of the people. Floods, droughts, landslides, hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis have resulted in crop failures. Globally, a report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) also states that recent changes in average temperature have had an impact on decreasing food production.
Global warming is the process of increasing the average temperature of the atmosphere, sea and earth. Rising temperatures occur due to the greenhouse effect which is the process of reflecting heat energy into the atmosphere in the form of infrared rays. The absorption of infrared light by the greenhouse causes an increase in temperature. Subsequent consequences, causing climate change within a certain period of time.
The process of global warming actually began to occur during the industrial revolution at the end of the 18th century. The discovery of mechanized agricultural tools as a substitute for animal power is thought to be the beginning of climate change. The use of fossil-fueled tractors as a substitute for cows or buffalo to plow the fields, for example. On the one hand, it can bring efficiency and effectiveness, but the exhaust gas in the form of carbon dioxide has an effect on the environment.
In its development, industry (including the agriculture industry) produces the most exhaust gas that triggers global warming, followed by exhaust gas produced from motor vehicle exhaust pollution. Massive deforestation (deforestation) contributes to accelerating global warming by inhibiting the process of absorption of CO2 by plants.
As a result of global warming, of course, also has an impact on human survival on earth. Extreme climate change, drastic temperature changes, floods, and other disasters which are allegedly the effects of global warming, have claimed the lives of not a few people. Even in regions/countries that were previously green zones (safe) from natural disasters, they are inevitably affected by climate change.
Such conditions have made many parties increasingly concerned about the impact of this Global Climate Change. The world food and agriculture organization or the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) is among the parties most concerned about this condition in relation to agricultural development and food availability. Because the decline in the productivity of agricultural products will also have an impact on reducing the level of food security, while food security itself is an important factor in the resilience of a nation or state. A food crisis that occurs in a country will trigger other crises such as social crises and security crises, as has happened in several countries in Africa. The food crisis in these countries has triggered an increase in criminal acts, security disturbances and even wars.
The presenter who delivered the material was Abdullah Athar, Senior Lerturer College of Management Science from Pakistan. This material was presented at an international webinar organized by the University of Science & Computer Technology (STEKOM University) in collaboration with the Karachi Institute of Economics & Technology (Pakistan), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Malaysia), STIE STEKOM, Association of Industrial and Vocational Communities (PERKIVI), Indonesian Smart Teacherpreneur Association (PTIC) and TopLoker.com. The webinar will be held on December 8, 2022 online using zoom media. All scheduled international presenters managed to attend and fill in the material properly.
The webinar activity is part of the implementation of STEKOM University's commitment to increase various international activities in order to realize the vision to become an international-class university.
