Fruit quality inspection, sorting and sorting: To improve and maintain the quality of fruits and vegetables and for Classification of agricultural products, image processing and machine learning. It is the exploration that is carried out at various levels and scales in fruits and vegetables to determine whether they fulfill the expected characteristics sufficiently to reach the final consumer.
In general, fruit quality inspection includes the following:
- Firmness, this feature helps to determine the maturity level of the fruit, done regularly with a penetrometer directly from the fruit in the field.
- Colour, This is probably one of the most important characteristics, given that it allows consumers to have the feeling that a product is in good condition. There are two ways to take this measurement: visually or instrumentally, where you can use a color chart where the product should be or done with a colorimeter.
- Morphology, everything related to the physical shape of a fruit or vegetable, such as size, weight or curvature. Instruments such as scales, measuring machines, and measuring tapes are used to take these measurements.
- Smell, especially in fruits such as oranges, the determining factor is the aroma that the fruit emits. This smell comes from the aromatic substances present in the skin and pulp of the fruit. Currently, one way to measure it through technology is through gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry.
Most implementations use Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to Detect Fruit Information Using Machine Learning Techniques. Machine learning (ML) enables researchers and developers to computationally solve problems related to real-world knowledge. ML gives computers the ability to act without being explicitly programmed, building algorithms to recognize patterns in data and make predictions based on them.
Today, deep learning (DL) is one of the most widely used ML-based methods. An important characteristic of DL is that it has a high level of abstraction and the ability to automatically learn patterns present in images. Notably, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is the main DL architecture used for image processing. CNNs are a kind of artificial neural network (ANN) which uses convolution operation at least in one of its layers.
The use of CNN can be applied to fruit image processing, especially in the areas of classification, quality control, and detection. The process can be started from capturing fruit images. Then pre-process the image. The next process is to analyze the quality of the fruit using the CNN method. After that it will produce an assessment result. The result will get two results, namely for good and bad fruit. This technology will simplify and speed up agricultural work with more accurate results.
The presenter who delivered the material was Mr. Adi Nugroho who is a graphic design lecturer at STEKOM University, Indonesia. The title of the presentation presented by Mr. Adi was "Digital Imaging Role in Information Technology Against Food Crysis". This material was presented at an international webinar organized by the University of Science & Computer Technology (STEKOM University) in collaboration with the Karachi Institute of Economics & Technology (Pakistan), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Malaysia), STIE STEKOM, Association of Industrial and Vocational Communities (PERKIVI), Indonesian Smart Teacherpreneur Association (PTIC) and TopLoker.com. The webinar will be held on December 8, 2022 online using zoom media. All scheduled international presenters managed to attend and fill in the material properly.
The webinar activity is part of the implementation of STEKOM University's commitment to increase various international activities in order to realize the vision to become an international-class university. Various international activities carried out by STEKOM University continue from year to year. There are international activities that are sustainable and there are also some international activities that are not sustainable. All types of international activities are accommodated and regulated by the International department of STEKOM University.
