Malaysian popular music,
sometimes called Malaysian pop (Malay: Pop Malaysia) or M-pop for
short, refers to a form of popular music in Malaysia. Although
popular music in various languages such as Mandopop is popular
and has been produced in Malaysia, Malaysian pop refers to music
recorded mainly in Malay in Malaysia. Malaysian Pop covers a wide
range of music genres, such as pop, rock, Ballad, Malaysian Folk
Music, hip hop, electronic, and R&B music.
At the
beginning of his presentation, Ravael talked about a famous Malaysian
song. Among them is "Berdiri di Mata Dunia" (Malay:
"Berdiri di Mata Dunia") is a song recorded and performed
by Malaysian singer and Queen Rock, Ella. The song was composed by
Wah Idris and American composer David Gates with lyrics written by
Habsah Hassan. It is best known when it was chosen as the theme song
for the 1998 Commonwealth Games, which Malaysia was hosting at that
time. Ella is the only Malaysian artist chosen to be the singer for
the theme song and also one of her flagship songs.
The
famous malaysia film presented by Ravael is mat luster. Mat Kilau:
Kebangkitan Pahlawan is an epic biographical film about history
released in Malaysia in 2022 directed by Syamsul Yusof with a script
by Syamsul and Shahruddin Mt Dali and produced by Studio Kembara.
Starring Adi Putra as the main character, the film is inspired by the
character Malaysian historical epic, Mat Kilau. Tells the story of
Mat Kilau with his father, Tok Gajah and his friends who fought hard
against the British occupation at one time. Beto Kusyairy, Fattah
Amin, Yayan Ruhian and Johan As'ari as supporting actors.
Syamsul
first came up with the idea to direct this film in 2017 after
receiving an offer from Studio Kembara to produce the film after the
previous director resigned. Filming took place in Perak, Pahang,
Melaka and Selangor over 100 days with a construction cost of RM8
million. The film was screened in theaters nationwide, Singapore and
Brunei on 23 June 2022. Mat Kilau received overwhelmingly positive
and encouraging reviews from audiences and film critics and grossed
the highest grossing RM71 million in just one month of screening,
making it one of the top films with the highest collection of local
films in Malaysia for 2022 at RM80 million, surpassing film
collections. Munafik 2 (2018), also directed by Syamsul who holds the
record for the highest film collection (RM48 million) for 4 years.
This film also invited a lot of criticism and controversy during its
screening.
Filming was conducted on April 1, 2018
with Production Fund funds of RM1.5 million and Marketing Fund of
RM300,000 allocated by FINAS, while the rest came from Studio
Kembara. According to Syamsul, the production team has taken the time
to build a pier, a British base and a mine as well as a market
location, in a grazing area on the banks of the Perak River in
Kampung Teluk Bakong, Lambor Kanan, Bota, Perak. He explained: "We
estimated the shoot would take two months and involve almost 500
extras and I can say that this film is the greatest work I have ever
directed.".
In August, filming was halted due
to internal problems before resuming in October. In June 2020 it was
reported that shooting for the film was nearing completion, and in
February 2021 the film was reported to be completed, but the release
had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak that hit
Malaysia.
On 15 May 2022, the actual cost to
complete the film was revealed to have cost RM8 million. The Mat
Kilau film was filmed over 100 days with some of it being shot in
Perak and several other locations including Pahang, Melaka and
Selangor.
