VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. In essence, the VUCA world means the world we live in today, where change is very fast, unpredictable, influenced by many factors that are difficult to control, and truth and reality become very subjective. If we want to survive in today's world, we cannot avoid these changes. We will often face situations where we can only adapt and cannot change the situation. As Albert Einstein said, "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change."
Awareness of VUCA theory today encourages many people to adapt more quickly and effectively. If someone resists change, then it is likely that that person will experience various lags that are quite far. Moreover, with the rapid development of information and communication technology as it is now, any changes in one place will be very easily and quickly transmitted to other areas.
STEKOM University as a professional educational institution with a global outlook is also trying to build an academic community that is responsive to the VUCA phenomenon. This reason is one of the reasons that prompted STEKOM University to hold an international webinar involving speakers from within the country and abroad who specifically discuss various fields related to the VUCA phenomenon. The webinar uses the title "Facing the changing business world in the VUCA Era".
The seminar was held on October 20, 2022 with 2 speakers from Malaysia and one speaker from Indonesia. The third speaker was Mr. Priyadi, M. Kom who was the only speaker from Indonesia. Priyadi is a lecturer in IT at STEKOM University so the material presented is in accordance with his field of expertise, namely "How to deal with vuca in IT-based business and career".
Although the understanding of VUCA has been conveyed by several previous speakers, Mr. Priyadi still conveys the understanding of VUCA. The goal is that there is a common perception of VUCA because there may be some different definitions or use of different terms compared to previous speakers or those on the internet in general.
After finishing discussing the meaning and impact of VUCA, Mr. Priyadi continued his explanation about the solution from VUCA. The solution to volatility is vision. To get a good vision, we must manage the data properly so that it becomes valid information. We also have to immediately communicate the changes that occur in order to obtain a clear view in handling future problems. Clarifying the direction is also important in this solution, without a clear direction we may get a less clear view and a less clear solution later.
The solution to uncertainty is understanding. Finding new perspectives will help us understand the problem. We also need to consider flexibility so as not to be tied to just one point of view. In addition, it would be nice if we look back to face the future better.
The solution to complexcity is clarity. Clarity measures we can do by increasing collaboration to understand the existing diversity. We can also find contextual non-permanent solutions to the phenomena that arise. The final stage of a series of steps that can be taken as a complexity solution is data management and classification.
The solution to ambiguity is understanding. The solution is almost the same as the uncertainty problem. But we need to define different steps. In responding to ambiguity we must have the desire to understand the problem or incident so that no problem is ignored, but it turns out to have a big impact. We must also have a desire to find patterns of problems or events that are complex and diverse in order to understand this diversity. Finally we have to find the solution formula and the opportunity to change the pattern.
