On September 26, 2023, STEKOM University held an international webinar entitled "INTERNATIONAL WEBINAR: How Ethics Will Change the Future of Technology". The seminar was an insightful discussion forum on the role of ethics in shaping the future of technology. The event took place from 2pm to 4pm Indonesian Time. The seminar was hosted by Novita from International Affairs at STEKOM University.
The speakers in this seminar involved competent figures in the field of technology and management, namely:
1. Prof. Polyanska Alla Stepanivna (Head of Department of Management and Administration) from IFNTUOG, Ukraine discussed the development of technology and the impact of ethics on management.
2. Prof. Nomin Tsembel (Lecturer at the Department of Accounting and Analytics) from Mandakh, Mongolia discussed the link between ethics and data analysis and finance.
3. Parvin Huseynov (Instructor of Information Security and Programming Department) from WCU, Azerbaijan presented on ethics in programming and information security.
4. Migunani M.Kom (Head of Information Systems Department) from STEKOM University, Indonesia gave an insight into ethics in information systems management.
Parvin Huseynov, one of the keynote speakers, opened his presentation by welcoming all participants and spoke about the urgency of the topic "How Ethics Will Change the Future of Technology." He stated that instructors should play a role in providing an understanding of ethics to the younger generation, while contributing to shaping the future of technology. Parvin Huseynov also discussed how history has shown that technology can affect ethics, such as the case of the development of the atomic bomb during World War II.
His presentation went on to discuss the impact of ethics in several emerging areas of technology, including:
1. Artificial Intelligence (AI): Parvin Huseynov described how AI can bring great benefits in problem solving, but also raises issues related to privacy, bias, and accountability. He gave the example of the use of facial recognition which can create racial bias in recognition.
2. Autonomous Vehicles: Parvin outlined the challenges of regulating autonomous vehicles, such as dealing with moral decisions (like the train issue) and the impact on jobs, such as the replacement of jobs by AI.
3. Biotechnology: He discussed the challenges of creating synthetic life and underlined the importance of regulation and ethical guidelines in technologies that could significantly affect humans, such as human gene editing.
4. Blockchain: Parvin Huseynov detailed issues that may arise in blockchain technology, including high energy consumption and data security.
5. Virtual Reality (VR) and Cybersecurity: A talk on VR and issues related to user privacy and mental health.
6. Social Media and Data Privacy: Parvin Huseynov highlighted how tech companies can take user data without permission and sell it, and the impact on data privacy and security.
All speakers underlined the need for regulation, awareness and ethics in dealing with the ethical challenges associated with technological developments. They stated that ethics should guide technological development, and that there is a need for a strong ethical framework to address emerging issues.
This international seminar provided valuable insights into how ethics will play a central role in shaping the future of technology. All speakers agreed that science and technology must be guided by strong ethical values to ensure benefits to society and the wider environment.
