In this seminar, Nomin Tsembel talked about "How Ethics Will Change the Future of Technology and Marketing" with a focus on personalized online advertising. He started by giving a definition of ethics based on the Oxford Dictionary as the moral principles that govern a person's behavior and the activities they engage in. Ethics also includes standards that distinguish between good and bad actions and right and wrong.
Tembel then explained how technology has influenced various industrial eras. He mentioned four industrial eras, starting from Industrial Era 1.0 known as the Steam Era to Industrial Era 4.0 where connectivity and social platforms have changed the way humans interact with technology.
The speaker then explained that we are currently in the Industrial Age 5.0, which is the Age of Augmentation and Human-Machine Symbiosis. He highlighted the huge impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in various sectors, including transportation, sales, and business models, particularly in marketing.
However, Tembel also highlighted the ethical issues that come with technological development. He raised the increasingly troubling issues of data privacy, bias in algorithms, and ethical use of technology. He argued that these issues must be addressed and technology must reflect ethical values.
For example, he discussed how location tracking by Google Maps can affect users' privacy. In addition, he discussed the issue of bias in Amazon's payroll application that ranks male job applicants higher than female.
Tembel also highlighted technology that can determine sexual orientation based on facial features. He pointed out that the development of this technology should consider ethical issues.
Nomin Tsembel concluded his presentation by emphasizing the importance of technology development that reflects ethics. He argued that while technology can bring benefits, ethics must remain at the forefront of future technological developments.
The seminar provided important insights into how technology and ethics are interconnected in changing our future. It is our hope that technological development will always consider the impact of ethics in dealing with the various issues that arise as technology grows.
