STEKOM University organized a seminar on an important topic in the world of public communication entitled "Mastering the Art of Speaking Fast and Smart: Communication Techniques for Public Speaking." This seminar was the second part of a series of seminars held on September 18, 2023, from 14.00 - 16.00 WIB. The event began with an opening speech by Dr. Joseph Teguh Santoso, Rector of STEKOM University.
In the second session of the seminar, Sheena, who serves as Head of the Communication Department at HELP University, Malaysia, was the keynote speaker. Sheena presented a highly relevant topic on "Strategies for Successful Public Speaking: Mastering the Art of Effective Communication."
Sheena began her presentation by emphasizing the importance of effective communication in today's era. In a fast-paced world, people do not have time to listen to long and boring speeches. Therefore, the ability to speak effectively in public has become very important.
One of the keys to success in public speaking is a deep understanding of the audience and their needs. Sheena highlights the importance of knowing who your audience is, what they like, and what they need. With this understanding, a speaker can better relate to their audience.
Sheena also invited seminar participants to think about their personal "branding" as a speaker. How do you want to be seen by your audience? How do you want them to perceive you? These questions help in building a consistent and effective image.
In public speaking, Sheena emphasized the importance of delivering a clear and concise message. The way the message is delivered is very important, from the choice of words to the structure of the presentation. The message should be delivered in a way that is easily understood by the audience.
To deal with the fear of public speaking or the stage, Sheena gave tips on how to develop self-confidence. One of them is to be yourself. When you perform as yourself, you will feel more confident and authentic.
Sheena also highlighted the importance of body language and hand gestures in public speaking. Effective body language, such as eye contact, smiles, and supportive gestures, can help you connect better with your audience.
The use of visual aids is also part of the communication techniques highlighted by Sheena. Visual aids such as presentation slides should support the message, not distract the audience. It is important to use visual aids judiciously and relevantly.
Sheena also shared strategies to keep the audience's attention and keep them engaged in the presentation. These include understanding your audience well, talking about topics that are relevant to them, and using powerful storytelling techniques.
Lastly, Sheena emphasized the importance of spontaneous speaking skills and answering questions from the audience. She advises to always come prepared with a deep knowledge of the topic at hand, but also understand that not all questions can be answered perfectly. Feel free to say if you don't know the answer and promise to find out.
With all these strategies and tips, Sheena hopes that seminar participants will become more confident and effective speakers in public speaking. Success in public speaking is an invaluable skill in today's ever-changing and fast-paced world.
