On Thursday, July 22, 2021, the University of Computer Science and
Technology (STEKOM University) held a Viting International Lecture
event in collaboration with Wuhan Polytechnic, China. In the event, a
lecturer from China Ms. Wan XiaZi, PhD delivered a topic about "The
Development Status and Industry Trend of 5G". The event was
opened by the Chancellor of STEKOM University, and went smoothly
until the end.
Wan XianZi explained in full about 5G, from
background, business challenges to industry trends. The development
of technology from the beginning to 5G is very rapid and adapted to
the increasing and varied needs of consumers. With 5g technology, we
will get a connection that is faster, stronger and with greater
capacity, said Wan XianZi.
The emergence of 5G technology
is expected to provide convenience to users. With 5G technology we
can surf the internet 500% faster than 4G networks. The advantages of
5G Network are:
5G network advantages:
1. Much
Better Transmission Speed
When compared to the technology
used by LTE and WCDMA which supports frequencies up to below 6 GHz,
5G NR is able to support frequencies up to 100 GHz. Which means 5G
networks deliver transmission speeds of up to 10 GB per second.
So,
when compared to LTE, 5G NR also still uses OFDM (Orthogonal
Frequency Division Multiplexing), but with some improvements.
Flexible subcarrier spacing is one of them.
This can help
5G NR to handle different frequency spectrum and usage. With such a
fast transmission, it is not surprising that 5G is seen as a very
revolutionary technology in this era.
2. Wider
Connection
In discussing the advantages and disadvantages
of 5G networks, even though both use OFDM, 5G networks are able to
offer advantages over 4G LTE. That is, the subcarrier spacing of 5G
can be multiples of 15 kHz. LTE itself can only be 15 kHz.
With
the convenience and flexibility it has, the use of radio frequency 5G
technology is better able to adapt to various devices. Which means
that 5G technology can be used on more devices.
More
precisely, the capacity of this 5G network is up to 100 times larger
than the previous network. This allows more people to communicate
with each other at the same time.
3. Almost No Delay
5G
networks don't just offer higher data transfer speeds. But this
network is able to offer lower latency and higher connection
density.
5G technology has a delay time of only about 4 to
5 milliseconds. In fact, it can be reduced to 1 millisecond. 10 times
faster than 4G technology. This allows us to view high-resolution
videos without buffering or twirling.
4. Energy
Saving
Regarding the advantages and disadvantages of 5G
networks, from the beginning 5G technology was designed to reduce
energy consumption. Its ability to reduce energy use by 10% is done
by reducing data traffic.
This super-fast data
transmission speed also makes a big contribution to bringing
energy-saving technology. In other words, 5G networks are greener and
more data bits per kilowatt of energy than 4G
networks.
Disadvantages of 5G technology:
Every
technological invention in addition to providing great benefits, also
saves drawbacks. This 5G technology is no exception. As the saying
goes, there is no ivory that is not cracked. The disadvantages of 5G
networks are:
1. Minimal Penetration
One of the
drawbacks of 5G technology is that the penetration power is still
very minimal or arguably low. Unlike previous technologies that can
penetrate barriers such as walls and concrete.
5G
technology is not good at breaking through barriers. This is because
the bandwidth used in 5G technology increases, therefore the area
that can be reached is reduced.
Devices that use 5G
technology don't reach as far as 4G. Which will certainly affect the
area that can be reached by 5G towers. So there are still areas or
places that cannot use this 5G network.
2. Full Radio
Frequency
Regarding the advantages and disadvantages of 5G
networks, the use of radio frequencies, which are currently very
dense, becomes a separate obstacle in the use of 5G technology. The
radio spectrum is already full with the presence of 3G and 4G which
are the ancestors of 5G.
Coupled with the presence of 5G,
of course, it will be even more full. Additional 5G network frequency
coverage of 6 GHz, which is already full of other signals. This
density of radio frequencies can certainly cause new problems for the
5G
network.

Ratih
Yuni Arman, M.Si as a representative from STEKOM University,
explained the material about the 5G connection in the world of
education, especially today in the State of Indonesia. During this
pandemic, the educational process is very dependent on technology and
will continue even after the pandemic ends. "Education must be
reachable and affordable, and 5G will provide a solution to this
issue of affordability," said Ratih.
Although
currently, new 5G technology can be owned by several countries such
as America, Europe, China and South Korea, but the development is
significant for other countries who want to have this technology.
