On Monday, June 26, 2023, STEKOM University held its much-anticipated online seminar titled "Why We Need Engineers Now More Than Ever." The seminar featured a number of prominent speakers, one of whom was Engineer Md. Safaet Hossain, Additional Director, IQAC and Head Dept of Comp Science & Engineering from CU, Bangladesh.
In his speech, Engineer Md. Safaet Hossain expressed his gratitude for the presence of all the participants and stated that their attendance reflected a commitment to knowledge, learning, and staying at the forefront of their respective fields. He mentioned that the seminar was a platform to exchange ideas and explore the latest developments in the field of industrial revolution, especially in the important role of engineers.
**Background of International Cooperation**
Engineer Md. Safaet Hossain also recalled the significant moment on June 15, 2022, where the international cooperation between STEKOM University and University in Bangladesh started. He celebrated the one-year anniversary of this collaboration as an important milestone in the development of the university.
**Why We Need Engineers More Than Ever**
In his presentation, Engineer Md. Safaet Hossain shared several reasons why we need engineers more than ever:
1. **Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR):** Engineers play a key role in developing technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, cyber security, and satellite communications that are part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
2. **Sustainability and Climate Change:** Engineers play a role in designing and implementing sustainable practices, developing renewable energy sources and creating energy efficient infrastructure.
3. **Infrastructure Development:** As populations and urbanization grow, engineers are responsible for designing, building and maintaining infrastructure systems such as roads, bridges, water supply networks and waste management systems.
4. **Health and Biotechnology:** The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the importance of health engineers in developing vaccines, improving medical services, and addressing future health challenges.
5. **Data Security and Privacy:** With the increasing reliance on technology and the internet, cyber security engineers are instrumental in developing systems that are safe from cyber threats.
6. **Global Connectivity and Communications:** Engineers contribute to the development of advanced communications technologies and networks to ensure global connectivity and address the digital divide.
7. **Disaster Mitigation and Resilience:** Engineers play a key role in reducing the impact of natural disasters by designing earthquake-, flood-, and hurricane-resistant structures and implementing early warning systems.

In concluding his presentation, Engineer Md. Safaet Hossain said that engineers have the skills, knowledge, and expertise needed to address today's most pressing challenges. Their ability for innovation, analytical thinking and engagement to create a better world make them irreplaceable in shaping a sustainable, technologically advanced and resilient future in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
